Patrick recently took a trip to South Africa, exploring the vernacular architecture in cape town, the winelands and along the garden route. Zietz Mocaa [the silo building at the V&A waterfront] was certainly the highlight of his trip – incredible workmanship by Architect Thomas Heatherwick. Top contender for Patrick's favourite building of all time.

Touring / Greece

Patrick took a trip to the Greek island of Zakynthos, where it had some of the most incredible scenery and coast lines in Europe.

We love nothing better than to stroll around on weekends and see some amazing architecture. While in London we took time to visit the amazing Serpentine Gallery 2018 designed by Architect Frida Escobedo, among another few beautiful buildings.

We carried out a site visit today in Co. Roscommon which could only be described as an incredible site, romantic cottage and beautiful surrounding rural landscape. This cottage over 150 years old, belongs to one of Ireland's best known traditional boat builders, with boats build which look like pieces of art.

Touring / Italy

Patrick took a trip to Italy, to visit “Castle Aragonese” on the island of Ischia and also to visit the famous “Villa Malaparte”, built in 1938 by the Rationalist architect Adalberto Libera in Punta Massullo on the Isle of Capri, which is considered to be one of the best examples of Modern Italian architecture.

Touring / Gdansk Airport

Terminal Gdansk Lech Wałęsa Airport, Poland has a dynamic external roof canopy with a playful effect on light and shadows on a dark summers night. Internally, the form has an undulating reversed pyramid structure which considered the users experience. 


Site Visit / Ireland

Whilst travelling to sites at the bottom of Ireland, an old redundant railway bridge reveals itself in the most dramatic location over a large river. This could be make for a beautiful project.

Possibly the oldest functioning sweet shop in Ireland located in rural west Cork.

The locality of Co. Cork produces fine photographs of the rugged coastline. The local people can enjoy their time on the sea and inlets on a beautiful crisp summer day. It was a pity we had work to do, but what a site!

The new 10 storey extension, called the Switch House, to the Tate Modern sits to the rear of the impressive existing structure both designed be Herzog de Meuron. New indoor bridges feature on the first and fourth floors connecting the spaces with the new and existing.

On a recent survey to an existing listed building, three ornamental faces try their hand at taunting the visitors.  


Architectural Visits / National Theatre

A journey along the South Bank of the Thames presented one of London best known brutalist buildings, the National Theatre designed by Denys Lasdun in 1976. The layered shuttered concrete has a presence on street level that is like no other.

Architectural Visits / Zaha Hadid; Serpentine Sackler Gallery

The Serpentine presented an exhibition of paintings and the rarely seen drawings of the pioneering and visionary Architect Zaha Hadid. This exhibition took place in the Serpentine Sackler Gallery which was one of Zaha’s first permanent buildings in central London.

Architectural Visits / Giants Causeway Visitor Centre

The stone mullions surrounding this visitor centre by Irish firm Heneghan Peng Architects imitate the towering basalt columns of the volcanically formed Giant’s Causeway, Northern Ireland’s most popular tourist attraction.

Look’s even more majestic in the wintering sunset.

The RSUA hold annual public lectures featuring work of significant international figures who influence contemporary architecture practice – this year’s selection was Snøhetta, which did not disappoint.

The RSUA took over the recently decommissioned Belfast Telegraph Print Works on Royal Avenue for this unique event which brings a night of architectural celebration to NI. It was great catching up with my Grand Design’s pal, Kevin McCloud. Patrick invited Kevin onto the stage to receive his award.


Life / Hot Air Balloon

Chilling in the container house at the weekend and all of a sudden, a local hot air balloon aeronaut landed in the field in front of my house inviting me to take a trip over the green fields of Ireland…I couldn’t say no!

The RSUA awards are executed every 2 years recognising the architecture and built environment across Northern Ireland. Patrick Bradley Architects were awarded the winner of ‘Best Single House or Extension over £100,000’. Patrick Bradley Architects were also short listed for the ‘Liam McCormick Prize for Building of the Year’.

Life / Snow Patrol signed guitar

A recent charity event saw Mr Patrick Bradley the proud highest bidder on a signed Snow Patrol guitar all in aid of ending homelessness in conjunction with the Simon Community. 


Site Visit / Inishfree Island

Inishfree island is land located in the Termon Peninsula located on the west coast of Co. Donegal. Patrick Bradley Architects were commissioned to undertake a design to extend an old dwelling that was completely off grid and was owned by 2 fishermen. The site even has its own private beach!

Architectural Visits / Château La Coste

Not just your typical vineyard but the ultimate chic exclusive art and architecture escape in the world. The site boasts a plethora of buildings and sculptures by well known artists and architects including Tadao Ando, Louise Bourheois and Frank Gehry to name a few. Patrick got a personal invite from the owner and tour around the whole Château.

Patrick Bradley Architects are the Winners of The Alan King Award 2015 at the award ceremony in the Savoy, London. The first time the Award has been awarded to an Architectural Practice in Northern Ireland.
